Where you will be able to get the book Writing Stuff
Where you will be able to get the book Will this book be available on Amazon.com? Yes Will it be in my local bookstore? Your bookstore will be able to order it for you. Where else will I and my friends be able to order it? On this website, on LessThanFour.org, and in any bookstores that choose to keep it in stock.
Writing for the book How do I get one of those t-shirts? If you are an amputee, and you write something coherent and at least vaguely interesting, you will get a t-shirt. Will you publish all the stories that get submitted? Hopefully. Again, as long as you write something that is coherent and at least vaguely interesting, we will publish it. No, please submit only once. The purpose of the book is to get your stories out there and reach other amputees and help them in their life. This book is probably going to lose money. Therefore there is no money to pay the authors. Can I resell copies and make money? Yes. You will be able to make a one-time order at the wholesale cost of the book (between $4 and $5) and then resell them in any way you want at the retail price of $15. Therefore you can make $10 profit per book. Can I hold a book signing in my hometown and sell copies and make money? Yes. You can hold a book signing at a bookstore, or sell copies to your friends or family (or give copies, if you are feeling kind and generous). How do I arrange to have a book signing? Contact the manager of the bookstore. Then try to convince him or her of how exciting and awesome your book signing will be. At my book signing, will I sell my own copies of the book (and make a profit) or will the bookstore sell copies they order from the publisher? Whatever you work out with the manager. Obviously they need to make money, too. Your best bet may be to bring your own copies and split the proceeds with the bookstore. You each get $5 for each book sold. Why do I have to transfer copyright of the story to you if I am not getting paid? Legal reasons. That's just how it works. Is this a scam so that you can get rich from my story? No, but thanks for asking. What if someone does get rich from this book. Who will get the money? The current plan is to donate $1 from every book sold to the Amputee Coalition of America. We will edit as little as possible, but may have to make slight changes for clarity, or the flow of the book. Obviously we won't change the facts or intent or your stories or other information. If major edits are required for some reason, you will be involved in the process. We will discuss them with you and you will be able to edit it yourself and approve the final draft. How will my piece be formatted? It will be a question and answer profile, much like the profiles on LessThanFour.org, except longer. Much longer. Do I have to write the maximum number of words for each question? No, absolutely not. If you can say something insightful with less words, that's always better. Do I have to answer every question? Nope. Just the ones with * are required. So just fill in the answers for the questions where you feel like you have something to say. Do I have to be a member of LessThanFour to participate? No. I am a family member of an amputee. Can I write for the book? Yes. Be sure to enter "family member" under the question "What is your disability." This is very important; otherwise your piece will not be categorized correctly. But yes, we do encourage you to write your advice about what to when someone in your family loses a limb. This is very important advice to include in the book.
Writing Stuff No, please stick to truth-telling. Should I change people's names? It's up to you. If you use someone's real name, please get their permission. This is your responsibility. Can I submit something I published elsewhere? Only if you still own the copyright. Nope. This book needs to be something that children and adults can read. But seriously. I really, really like to use profanity, and I don't want you to sensor me. So can I please drop if a few f-bombs? You can use f-bombs on the privacy of your own blog.
